There's a moment every Featherweight owner gets curious about: what would it be like to guide the fabric myself—no feed dogs, no set stitch length, just my hands and the needle?
That's free-motion sewing. Whether you want to quilt a stipple pattern across a baby quilt, darn a favorite pair of jeans, or trace a signature in thread, it starts with two things: a foot that hops with each stitch so you can move freely, and a cover plate that takes the feed dogs out of the equation.
The Embroidery & Darning Foot is an all-metal, spring-loaded reproduction that fits your Featherweight's low shank. It hops up with every stitch, giving you room to guide your fabric in any direction—forward, backward, side to side. The Feed Cover Plate is a tiny clip-on piece replicated after the original Singer part. It snaps right over your 221's feed dogs so they can't grab the fabric.
Together, they turn your Featherweight into a free-motion machine. Add a fresh Roll of 15 Bobbins—because free-motion work eats through thread—and you're set to start practicing.
A few things to know before you begin: start with small projects like a mug rug or placemat and work your way up. Give your motor cool-down breaks between sections on anything larger than a placemat. Quick, long hand movements create longer stitches; slow, short movements create shorter ones. Increase presser bar pressure for thicker fabrics—it sounds counterintuitive, but the batting acts like a spring and the extra pressure helps form proper stitches.
